In a close game it was the New York (AL) Yankees 7, the Cleveland Indians 5 at
Jacobs Field.

Mike Mussina(1-0) had a solid outing for New York (AL). He went 7 innings

Chris Carpenter(1-0) and John Smoltz(0-1) treated the St. Louis fans to a fine
pitching duel at Busch Stadium. The St. Louis Cardinals eventually emerged
as victors over the Atlanta Braves by the score of 2 to 1.

St. Louis came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 8th inning with
2 runs on 2 hits. John Rodriguez was the sparkplug when he ripped a solo
home run (his 1st of the season). David Eckstein struck out, unable to help
the rally. After another out, Albert Pujols came to the plate and hit a
bases-empty home run (his 1st of the season). The teams had been locked in a
scoreless duel until the 6th inning.

Carpenter was helped out by Jason Isringhausen who recorded his 1st save.
